The State Commission for Human Rights in Kerala sought a report from the district collector Kozhikode and the Public Work Department (PWD) on steps that have been undertaken to reduce accidents caused by careless ditches along national and state motorways.
The Commission applied for a report as a result of media reports for a growing number of accidents caused by exposed ditches along the main roads. The message should be submitted within 15 days after the solution of road users’ security concerns.
In one of the accidents, the manager of food supplies came from the city. The Commission issued more instructions after noticing another incident, when the nurse fell into a deep exposed ditch recently along the highway in the city.
Recurrent incidents have triggered protests by the Association of Road Users and the Population. They argued that no preventive measures such as warning boards or lights were to warn motorists and pedestrians to avoid accidents.
