Former state police chief TP Senkumar, now a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, said that actor Dileep was framed as an accused in the assault case without proper evidence against him.
Mr. Senkumar strongly criticized the manner in which the actor was charged and alleged that the investigation team had adopted an unacceptable approach of “arresting a person first and then trying to create evidence against him”.
“Is this how the case should be investigated?” he asked in a Facebook post, stressing that police must approach cases with an open mind, not a “predisposed state”
Mr. Senkumar further said that investigation teams should never fabricate evidence under any circumstances. “In all investigations I have directed or supervised, I have strictly followed the one principle of not creating evidence that does not exist,” he wrote.
He said during his brief return as state police chief in 2017, a tenure that lasted just two months, he had limited interactions with the officers working on the case. Even then, on the basis of available information, he concluded that there was no relevant or admissible evidence linking Dileep to the crime at that time.
