India head coach Gautam Gambhir has said that as a coach he never celebrates losing a series. The comment did not go down well with a large section of fans who claim it is a dig at Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. India recently lost the three-match ODI series in Australia.
However, they managed to avoid the fade by winning the third ODI in Sydney by nine wickets – a victory that was celebrated nationally thanks to a massive partnership between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. After the Australian tour, Gautam Gambhir reiterated that he does not celebrate individual milestones.
“Look, I don’t think so, honestly. I think I’ve always believed that it’s not about individual performances. Yes, I can be very happy with individual performances, yes. And I’ll always stay happy with individual performances, but in the end we lost the ODI series. That’s the bottom line. And I can never celebrate losing a series as a coach on social media,” Gambhir said in a video shared on media.
Gambhir further mentioned that it is his moral responsibility to ensure that losses are never celebrated as players have a national duty.
“As a player I can appreciate individuals, but as a coach I think it’s my moral responsibility that we as a nation and we as individuals should never, ever celebrate losing a series. At the end of the day, we represent the country,” he added.
Gambhir’s comments were not well received by the fans who called it a veiled dig at senior batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Despite India losing the series 1-2, fans celebrated the match-winning 168-run partnership between the two senior batsmen. Rohit scored an unbeaten 121* (125) and Virat Kohli scored 74* (81) as India chased down 237 in 38.3 overs. While Gambhir did not take any names, his comments are being circulated on social media as a possible attack on Rohit and Kohli.
