Dictionary.com’s Word of the Year 2026: Why was ‘Maxxing’ chosen for the coveted crown? Meaning, Uses, History & More | Today’s news

Dictionary.com has named “maxxing” its word of the year for 2026, recognizing its growing popularity. Announced on October 26, this choice reflects a desire to get more out of everyday life. The word also describes how people joke about constantly trying to improve.

Short for “maximizing,” maxxing means doing something to the fullest or doing it as efficiently as possible. It can stand alone or attach to the end of almost any word. This flexibility has helped to expand into many different subjects online.

“Sleepmaxxing” describes trying to get the best sleep possible, while “proteinmaxxing” means eating more protein. “Cozymaxxing” turns a quiet evening at home into the most pleasant experience possible.

Other examples include “gymmaxxing”, “healthmaxxing” and “fibermaxxing”. Dictionary.com also associates maxxing with “min-maxing”, a game strategy that boosts a character’s best abilities.

Steve Johnson, director of lexicography for Dictionary Media Group, said the word appears in many topics. Its reach has expanded to various articles and areas of life. This wide usage helped it stand out as this year’s pick.

Johnson said usage is up more than 1,000% year-to-date. This number comes from media analyzed by Dictionary.com. Another reported estimate compared usage in August 2026 to the average monthly rate through 2025.

The August figure was almost 19 times higher than the previous average. These numbers measure different comparisons and should be understood independently.

According to Johnson, maxxing reflects a culture that seeks the maximum of everything. Dictionary.com emphasized both personal improvement and humor around the pressure to continually improve.

The word has also moved beyond fitness and daily routine. “Tokenmaxxing” describes the maximum use of AI tools. Political news also uses “homelandmaxxing”.

However, its roots go back several years. Dictionary.com’s archived entries for “looks maxxing” date back to 2015. The term originated in online incel and manosphere forums. Men used these spaces to discuss how to make themselves more attractive. By 2021, “Moneymaxxing” and “statusmaxxing” appeared.

Popularity

The two-X spelling spread through online forums before reaching mainstream social media. According to CBS Minnesota, they helped popularize Gen Z and Gen Alpha. His journey brought the older online term into much wider use.

Maxxing beat out four finalists: “affordability,” “data center,” “odyssey,” and “unc.” Affordability reflected discussions about housing, health care, gas and food.

The data center highlighted the growth of artificial intelligence, while Odyssey gained attention after the Christopher Nolan film. Unc describes someone considered unavailable.

Last year’s winner was “6-7,” a Gen Alpha term with no clear meaning. Maxxing offers a contrast due to its clear meaning and wide usage. It describes serious attempts at improvement and leaves room for jokes about excess.
