The Ministry of the Ministry of Internal Security (DHS) Kristi Noem said on Sunday (August 31) that Trump’s administration would soon expand the immigration operations in Chicago and confirm the increased presence of federal agents in the third largest city of the nation.
“We already had a continued operation with ICE in Chicago … but we intend to add more resources to these operations,” Noem said in CBS News reports.
She refused to provide specific details, but DHS applied for limited logistics support from Great Lakes, about 35 miles north of Chicago last week to help in this effort.
Possible deployment of the National Guard
Noem added that it was Trump’s “privilege” to put the National Guard soldiers in Chicago, as well as in Los Angeles in June during immigration protests.
“I know La wouldn’t stand today if President Trump did not take steps,” Noem said. “This city would burn if the mayor and governor of that state remained on the facilities of the mayor and governor of this state.”
Trump focuses on Illinois’s leadership
President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized Governor Illinois JB Pritzker and Mayor of Chicago Brandon Johnson for crime and immigration. On Sunday, Trump wrote Social truth: “Six people were killed and 24 people and JB Pritzker, weak and poor governor Illinois were shot in Chicago last weekend, just said he didn’t need help in crime prevention.
Illinois leaders are pushing back
Both Pritzker and Johnson pushed back against the plans of the administration and claimed that the crime in Chicago was falling. They also committed to resist any federal overlap.
Johnson has already signed an order that prevented the Chicago Police Department from working with federal agents to enforce civic immigration, including patrols, stopping traffic and checkpoints.
“Chicago will not be a partner in violating the rights of our inhabitants,” Johnson’s office said.
On Wednesday (August 27), Pritzker pushed against Trump’s threats to expand the federal operations in Chicago criminal proceedings and said that the Democrats have already progressed in crime.
“We are also claiming crime,” Pritzker said. Trump said, “He talks about a good game. What the president did is make it difficult to take a crime.”
Shrine laws in the foreground
Chicago, the home of one of the largest populations of immigrants in the country, has strong shrines that limit cooperation with federal recovery of immigration. Illinois has some of the most difficult rules against cooperation in the nation, often contrary to Trump’s immigration policies.
