Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh has thrown his weight behind the IPL ‘Impact Sub’ rule, calling it a game changer for young cricketers, while revealing that he models his wicket on MS Dhoni.
The 25-year-old, who has emerged as one of the top-order PBKS batsmen in recent seasons, said The Impact Sub rule opened up opportunities which was hard to come by earlier in his career.
“As a youngster, I see the Impact Sub rule as a great opportunity for young players and I have said this many times. Many people don’t like it because obviously the team can take a much riskier decision when a player is added to the side, be it a batsman or a bowler,” Prabhsimran said in a media interaction.
“But for the young players, it’s invaluable. When I joined the (PBKS) franchise, I spent eight years with them and four of those years I didn’t get many chances to play. When I was sitting on the sidelines, I was always hoping for a hit and now, because of the Impact Sub rule, I feel the opportunities for the youngsters have increased significantly,” added the young top lieutenant.
The rule has drawn criticism from several pundits who believe it favors batsmen and limits the role of all-rounders, but Prabhsimran said he sees it as a platform to give fringe players a chance to prove themselves.
With India blessed with several top batsmen like KL Rahul, Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan, Prabhsimran has made it clear that he prefers to stay true to his own style of batting but is consciously working to maintain it by watching Dhoni.
“You can’t say I’m trying to copy anyone…they’re all my seniors and everyone has their own style of play, while I have mine. Now that I’m holding too, I’ve seen Mahi bhai hold his hands so fast.”
“I am not trying to copy anyone in batting, but when it comes to keeping, I am consciously trying to be like Mahi bhai.
Having established himself as a key player for Punjab Kings for quick starts, Prabhsimran also spoke about how the approach to T20 cricket has evolved, especially in the powerplay.
“The game has become so fast that it used to be possible to defend 170-180, and that can still happen today, but when you look at the numbers, scores over 200 are becoming more and more the norm. To get over 200, I feel the power forward needs to be approached with an attacking mindset.”
“Clarity from the team coach and the captain is key in deciding whether we should go all out and with that clarity, scoring 250 is not too difficult. Clarity of thought is key because to post or chase 200, you have to play high-risk cricket,” said the Punjab player who, like India opener Abhishek Sharma, is also looking for guidance from Yuvraj S.
“With Yuvi paaji, it’s not like a coach-student relationship, it’s more like an elder brother. Whenever Priyansh Arya and I have time, we call him and ask for guidance and he arranges training either in Mohali or Gurgaon. We even have the freedom to call him and disturb him at 3 or 4 in the morning.”
On his ambitions in India and the competition for placements, Prabhsimran said that the only way forward remains constant effort.
“The level of competition for a place in India means you have to push yourself even harder, less effort just won’t do. The competition is huge, but taking it positively as healthy competition will help you grow. That chance to play in the senior team will come, but I will have to keep raising the bar.”
“Abhishek Sharma and I share a very close bond and we’ve played a lot of cricket together. It’s great to see someone you’ve played with succeed and I always wish him the best in good times and bad. At the same time, it gives me a healthy boost, my partner has made it to India and now it’s my turn,” Prabhsimran said.
