(PTI photos) New Delhi: Chief coach Chennai Super Kings Stephen Fleming admitted that turning their deplorable campaign IPL 2025 would be a “big challenge”, emphasizing that Mrs. Dhoni’s return as a captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury is not a magical solution.
“His (Dhoni) influence will always be prominent, but it’s not Soothsayer, he doesn’t have a magic wand,” Fleming told journalists before the CSK clash with Lucknow Super Giants on Monday. “It can’t just be wiped over the side, otherwise it would bring it earlier. It is a case when we worked very hard with the MS to turn it and certainly in both of our cricket careers we were in situations that require a lot of energy and we have to make sure that energy is in the right place.”

With five consecutive defeats that left the CSK anchored at the bottom of the table, including the loss of overwhelming for the KKR, where they published their lowest sum on Chepauk (103/9), Fleming said that the group hurts and undergoing deep introspection.

“The disappointed aspect, especially the last game, was the lack of the competition we built, and it hurts a lot,” he said. “Certainly there was a lot of internal search for souls … but it’s not words, it’s about the players to grab a moment, look for form and shake worries.”

Fleming was also thinking about the wider nature of the T20 cricket: “I know there is a fascination of power and six hit, but there is still room for the craft … I would be very sad if he had just become a baseball competition.”

Looking at Monday’s game against the highly flying LSG, Fleming confirmed that Shivam Dube was likely to fit and emphasized the importance of Nicholas Pooran. “At the moment he is the best player in the world – consistent, powerful and real threat.”
