Smoke billowing from garbage heaps at Hosayallapur in Dharwad continues to engulf several localities.
Residents of localities around the landfill site, angered by the ongoing problems caused by smoke, stopped the entry of ash vehicles for the third day in a row on Wednesday to protest against the apathy of the officials.
The fire, believed to have been caused by a chemical reaction in the piles of rubbish, continues to burn and cause smoke, and council authorities are still investigating possible solutions to put it out. The residents are naturally irritated and fear that not putting out the fire could make the situation worse.
Residents formed barricades near the dumping ground on Monday and Tuesday and stopped garbage-laden vehicles on Wednesday, resulting in about 50 vehicles getting stuck on the Hosayallapur road.
As a result, door-to-door garbage collection in Dharwad has been affected, forcing residents to dump household waste on vacant land and along the road.
