Director General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services) Alok Kumar said on Saturday that remedial action would be initiated to restore order in prisons after videos allegedly showed inmates of the Kalaburagi Central Jail engaging in prohibited activities, adding that an inquiry report had been sought by January 20.
“An inquiry report has been sought by January 20, on the basis of which action will be taken against all those found responsible, including jail staff and inmates,” Mr. Kumar said, warning that tough action would be initiated against officials found to be involved in or complicit in misconduct in the jail.
Mr. Kumar was speaking to pressmen after conducting an extensive inspection of every barrack in the jail for more than four hours.
He said that since taking charge as DGP (Prisons), he has been visiting prisons across the state to assess their functioning. “Prisoners are placed in prisons after committing crimes. Prisons should not become places that allow them to commit further violations. The focus needs to be on reform and behavior change,” he said.
Appealing to the jail staff to discharge their duties honestly and responsibly, Mr. Kumar said any dereliction of duty or involvement in illegal activities would be dealt with sternly.
He confirmed that prohibited activities had taken place in Kalaburagi jail and said an investigation team led by Additional Inspector General of Prisons PV Anand Reddy had been formed. The team has already started an inspection and will make another visit to the prison to collect more evidence.
However, Mr Kumar cautioned against jumping to conclusions about the viral videos at this stage, saying the intent of the video could be ascertained only after the investigation is complete.
Referring to the allegation of private interference in the prison administration, he said CCTV footage was being examined as part of the investigation.
