Director General of Police CV Anand on Thursday reviewed the functioning and operational readiness of Telangana’s elite forces, Greyhounds and OCTOPUS, during separate visits to their headquarters, stressing the need for enhanced combat readiness, advanced training and modernization.
At the Greyhounds headquarters, the DGP conducted a comprehensive review of counter-Maoist operations and assessed the force’s performance in the discharge of insurgency-related duties. He reviewed existing training standards, curricula and operational modules and directed the leadership to further strengthen readiness through regular live-fire exercises and rigorous training.
Mr. Anand also reviewed the issue of reducing manpower at Greyhounds in view of declining Maoist activity. He informed the officers that a proposal regarding 708 surrendered posts was pending with the state government and said that the repatriations would be done after necessary approvals.
Later, the DGP visited the OCTOPUS Commando training center at Ibrahimpatnam where he inspected the administration and training blocks, operational facilities and newly constructed infrastructure.
He reviewed the force’s readiness to respond to terrorism-related incidents and reviewed the functioning of the Special Weapons and Tactics Teams and the Training Wing.
DGP Operations Anil Kumar briefed him about mock exercises conducted in vulnerable installations, counter-terrorism preparedness drills and specialized training in handling advanced weapons and operational equipment.
Addressing the officers and commandos, Mr. Anand emphasized the importance of conducting mock operations in various building structures and real-time scenarios to improve response capabilities. He emphasized maintaining the highest standards of physical fitness, alertness and continuous readiness.
The DGP also reviewed the requirements for upgrading modern equipment and infrastructure for OCTOPUS and advised the force to strengthen strategies for securing existing and upcoming airport facilities.
He said the Greyhounds and OCTOPUS have earned national recognition for their professionalism and operational excellence and ensured that both units continue to receive full support from the government and the police department to further strengthen their capabilities.
