The Andhra Pradesh Police is facing challenges in controlling cyber crime, transportation gangs and crimes against women, Director General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta said.
While the public lost around ₹815 crore, the police froze ₹98 crore in banks and returned ₹3 crore to cyber crime victims, the DGP explained.
While giving the crime figures for 2025 at a press conference here on Monday, Mr. Harish Kumar Gupta said that overall crime has reduced by 6.17% in the year.
When asked about the challenges facing the police in the state, the state police chief said that the biggest challenges are to control cyber crimes, transportation gangs and crimes against women and children.
“The police dealt with more than 62,000 complaints related to cyber crimes and registered 2,332 cases in 2025. In terms of digital arrest cases, the accused were operating from China and other countries and exchanging money for cryptocurrencies, which is difficult for the police to recover,” the DGP said.
He stressed the need to create awareness among the public to prevent crimes like digital arrest.
Narcotics cases fell to 1,727 this year against 1,875 in 2024. Police arrested 9,478 accused, seized 1,525 vehicles used to smuggle ganja and other drugs and seized assets worth about ₹9.11 crore.
Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) chief and Inspector General of Police Ake Ravi Krishna said surveillance has been stepped up on interstate ganja gangs operating in AP.
“We are coordinating with the Anti-Narcotic Force (ANTF) of other states and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to check the smuggling of ganja and drugs. Our teams are moving to other states to check the transportation of ganja,” he added.
In terms of physical crimes, the DGP said that murder cases have come down to 856 from 772 in 2024 and kidnapping cases have come down to 645 from 768. Detection of property crimes was 56% and recovery was about 55% in 2025, Mr. Harish Kumar Gupta said.
Crime against women decreased to 16,347 against 16,994 in the previous year. There has been a significant reduction in rape, gang-rape and murder, assault on women and other crimes, the DGP said, adding that the number of POCSO Act cases has reduced by about 11%.
However, there has been an increase in economic crimes. A total of 8,034 cases were registered in 2025, compared to 7,667 last year.
The AP police department plans to conduct a two-day workshop for IPS officers in January 2026, which will focus on strengthening civil engineering, technology, skill development and other techniques, the DGP said.
IGP (Operations) Ch. Srikanth, AP Forensic Officer G. Pala Raju, DIG (Law and Order) K. Fakeerappa, IGP (Sports) KV Mohan Rao, DIG (Administration) RN Ammireddy and other officers were present.
