Completion of more than five lakh houses under the LIFE Mission and inauguration of a model rehabilitation village in Kalpetta for families affected by landslides in Wayanad are not just two projects but fulfillment of social interventions to ensure people’s sustenance and livelihood, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
In a statement on Monday, he said here that since February 2026, more than 6,000 families have received financial assistance under the LIFE mission’s housing program. More than 5 million houses have been completed. A financial assistance of ₹ 4,000 is provided per beneficiary (₹ 6,000 for Scheduled Tribe families) living in difficult terrains. A total of ₹20,831 crore was spent by the state government, with the state government bearing the major share.
After the devastating landslides in the Mundakkai-Chooralmala area of Wayanad in 2024, the state government launched a comprehensive rehabilitation programme. The official inauguration of the township will take place on March 1. On an area of 64.47 hectares, construction of 178 of the 410 houses planned under the project has been completed, benefiting more than 1,662 people.
The project includes roads, health centres, anganwadis, markets, community facilities and other infrastructure and the houses are designed keeping in mind the terrain and climate of Wayanad and are earthquake resistant. For the state, development is not just about statistics, but about uplifting those left behind. These initiatives are also examples of governance rooted in social justice and human dignity, the Chief Minister said.
