The two-day Desi Rice Mela began at Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry in Mysuru on Saturday and showcased more than 200 native paddy varieties from across the country and highlighted the nutritional and cultural importance of traditional rice.
Organized jointly by Sahaja Samrudha, Sahaja Seeds and Save Our Rice Campaign, the mela aims to create awareness about Karnataka’s indigenous rice varieties while providing better market opportunities for organic paddy farmers.
Traditional varieties like Siddha Sanna, Ambemohar, Gandhasale, Ratnachoodi, Rajamudi, HMT, Kempu Sanna, Barma Black and Salem Sanna are on display at the exhibition. Apart from red and black rice, medicinal varieties including Karigajavali, Navara and Rakthasali are also displayed and sold.
The event also showcases value-added products made from indigenous rice, organic products, native seeds and nurseries. On Sunday, there will be a drawing competition on ‘Indigenous Rice Cultivation and Culture’ for children aged 5 to 12 years and a traditional desi rice cooking competition.
Organizers said the mela seeks to revive traditional varieties of rice that have been gradually disappearing from farms and dining tables, while promoting healthier food choices.
