The Kerala State Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA), which temporarily shelved its plans for an indefinite boycott of outpatient clinical services and academic activities in medical colleges across the state, has decided to renew its agitation.
On Saturday, the government came out with a new order that acceded to one of the major demands of the KGMCTA to correct anomalies in the pay revision that resulted in a reduction in the pay package for doctors in the entry cadre of the Medical Education Service.
KGMCTA, in a statement issued here, pointed out that even though the new salary anomaly in the entry cadre has not been completely resolved, it welcomed the government’s positive step. However, she expressed her strong displeasure and protest that the payment of salary revision arrears due to State Medical College doctors from 2026 onwards was completely ignored.
Despite the issuance of the new order, the government’s continued neglect of the long-pending arrears of doctors’ salary revisions — despite repeated assurances over the years — is totally unacceptable, KGMCTA president Rosenara Beegum and general secretary CS Aravind said here on Saturday.
“At a time when the government has decided to fully settle the salary revision arrears due to other state government employees, the continued neglect of the Medical College doctors – who have worked tirelessly to save lives during the COVID-19 pandemic – is highly condemnable and unjustifiable. The government cannot show this injustice to the doctors,” they said.
In this context, the State Committee of the KGMCTA, which met here on Saturday, decided that the organization has no other option but to continue the agitation.
Although the KGMCTA has suspended its agitation to give the government time to take a decision, it is continuing its protest through non-cooperation with the government and organizing a relay hunger strike at the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram.
The relay hunger strike entered its 12th day on Saturday. Doctors from medical colleges across the state are participating in the hunger strike for all these days, maintaining the momentum gained by the agitation.
