Dengue: Punalur municipality implements measures on war footing
Punalur municipality has initiated aggressive precautionary and resource reduction measures following the confirmation of three dengue cases and subsequent health department warning about a sharp increase in mosquito density across the region. An increase in the vector population was detected during a recent field inspection by the District Vector Control Unit within the city limits.
Prompted by the detection and increased risk of outbreaks of water-borne and infectious diseases during the ongoing monsoon, the civic authorities have convened an emergency high-level meeting. The meeting brought together representatives from the Vector Control Unit, City Health Wing, ASHA workers and local health workers to map out an immediate containment strategy.
As part of the primary phase of the action, the municipality decided to start large-scale chlorination of all domestic and public wells across the city’s sectors. To help residents, a dedicated framework will be established to test the quality of well water in these areas and ensure the safety of drinking water amid the epidemic.
As heavy rains create potential breeding grounds, officials have focused on resource-destroying initiatives. The municipality will issue strict guidelines to rubber and pineapple growers in the region to ensure their plantations do not collect stagnant water. In addition, private landowners will be required by law to immediately remove overgrown brush and vegetation on their property where mosquitoes could harbor. Local health units are expected to launch intensive field inspections in the coming days to monitor compliance and speed up anti-larvae operations.
