Democratic Legislators Urge Rubio to Renew New Start Nuclear Treaty with Russia
A group of Democratic legislators has called on Senator Marco Rubio to support the renewal of the New START nuclear treaty with Russia, citing the importance of maintaining diplomatic relations and reducing the threat of nuclear war.
The New START treaty, signed in 2010, sets limits on the number of deployed nuclear weapons held by the United States and Russia, as well as the number of warheads and bombers. The treaty is set to expire in 2026, and its renewal is a pressing issue in the current geopolitical landscape.
A group of 23 Democratic senators, led by Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren, wrote a letter to Rubio, a Republican, urging him to work with his colleagues to secure the treaty’s extension. The letter noted that the New START treaty is a critical component of the United States’ national security strategy, as it helps to reduce the risk of nuclear conflict and promote global stability.
"The New START treaty is a cornerstone of our national security strategy, and we cannot afford to let it lapse," said Senator Markey, who is co-chair of the Senate’s Disabilities and Foreign Relations committee. "By working together, we can ensure that this essential treaty is extended, and the United States and Russia continue to reduce their nuclear arsenals, thereby reducing the risk of nuclear war."
The letter also emphasized the economic benefits of extending the treaty, citing the potential for increased economic cooperation and trade between the United States and Russia. Furthermore, the signatories noted that the treaty’s success has contributed to improved relations between the two nations, and its renewal would be a vital step in maintaining a constructive relationship.
"Globally, the risk of nuclear conflict is higher than ever, and it is crucial that we continue to work together to reduce these dangers," added Senator Warren, a leading proponent of progressive policies. "By extending the New START treaty, we can demonstrate our commitment to diplomacy and demonstrate that we are willing to work together to achieve common sense solutions that benefit both our nations and the world."
The call to action comes as tensions between the United States and Russia continue to rise over issues such as Ukraine, Syria, and election interference. However, the legislators argued that the New START treaty is a key element of maintaining dialogue and cooperation, even in the face of disagreements.
"Renewing the New START treaty is not only about national security, but also about our capacity to engage in diplomatic efforts that promote global peace and stability," said Senator Chris Murphy, a co-signatory to the letter. "We cannot let our differences divide us; we must work together to address the many global challenges we face, starting with this critical treaty."
The letter was also signed by Senators Sherrod Brown, Jeff Merkley, Patty Murray, and Richard Blumenthal, among others. The legislators urged Rubio to work with them to pass legislation extending the New START treaty by the end of the year, ensuring that the treaty remains in effect beyond 2026.
As the debate surrounding the New START treaty continues, it remains to be seen whether Rubio will heed the call to action or resist the effort to renew the treaty. However, the magnitude of the issue and the weight of the Democratic legislators’ arguments make it clear that the fate of the treaty hangs in the balance.
