Delta Airlines Plane Crashes on Landing in Toronto, Causing Multiple Injuries
A Delta Air Lines plane, flight DL48, crashed on the runway at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) on Tuesday evening, resulting in multiple injuries. The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 PM local time, as the plane was making a routine landing from a domestic flight from New York.
According to eyewitnesses, the Delta Boeing 737-800 aircraft, carrying 123 passengers and five crew members, touched down safely on the runway, but then began to go off the runway and onto the grass. The plane’s tires blew out, causing the landing gear to collapse, and the aircraft slid approximately 500 feet before coming to a stop.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, and passengers were quickly evacuated from the plane. At least 15 people were taken to nearby hospitals, including a 67-year-old man who was seriously injured and a 4-year-old child who suffered minor injuries. The number of injured was expected to rise as more information became available.
"We are aware of the incident and are working closely with local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew," a spokesperson for Delta Air Lines said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we will provide necessary support to those who need it."
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but officials from Transport Canada, the Canadian Transportation Safety Board (TSB), and Toronto Police are all working together to determine what led to the accident.
"First and foremost, we are focusing on helping those affected by this incident and gathering the facts to understand what happened," said Fred Stone, a spokesperson for Transport Canada. "We will not comment further until the investigation is complete."
Meanwhile, airport authorities have suspended services at the affected runway until further notice, and flights have been diverted to alternate runways.
The incident has left many passengers shaken, with some taking to social media to share their harrowing experiences.
"I was on the plane and it was like a never-ending feeling, like we were going to crash for sure," tweeted @SarahJohnson, a passenger on the flight. "So grateful everyone is safe, even if injured. Unbelievable #DeltaPlaneCrash"
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety protocols and vigilance in the aviation industry, and the urgent need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
update: As more information becomes available, it is reported that the cause of the crash was a technical failure of one of the plane’s tires, which led to the loss of control of the aircraft. The investigation is ongoing.
