
Delhi on Friday woke up to a chilly winter morning and shallow fog amid a yellow warning from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for a cold wave. Cold wave conditions persisted for the sixth consecutive day on January 16 as the mercury dropped significantly in the city.
The Palam weather station reported a minimum temperature of 2.3 degrees Celsius on Thursday, followed by Ayanagar where the mercury dropped to 2.7 degrees Celsius. Besides, Safdarjung, the primary weather station, recorded a minimum temperature of 2.9 degrees Celsius, while Lodhi Road recorded a temperature of 3.4 degrees Celsius.
In Safdarjung area, the mercury dropped 4.5 degrees below normal. This marks Safdarjung’s lowest January minimum temperature in three years as the mercury dipped to 1.4 degrees Celsius on January 16, 2023.
On January 15, Delhi recorded its coldest morning of the season at 2.9 degrees Celsius. The IMD predicted: “Mostly clear skies, partly clear skies by evening. Cold waves at isolated places. Light fog at many places with dense fog at isolated places during morning hours. Maximum and minimum temperatures over Delhi likely to be in the range of 21 °C to 23 °C and 04 °C to 06 °C respectively.”
The Met Office has suggested that the minimum temperature today will be 1.6 to 3 degrees Celsius below normal and the maximum temperature 1.6 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal.
Fog status in Delhi
Dense fog enveloped the capital on Thursday, disrupting flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) due to low visibility, which was reported at 50 meters at 7:00 am. However, visibility improved today and was recorded at around 800 meters at 6am.
