
A tragic road accident was reported on Sunday after a groom driving a Mercedes crashed into 3 pedestrians waiting for an autorickshaw at Nelson Mandela Marg. 1 died while 2 others sustained serious injuries in the incident.
The accused driver, who was employed as a software engineer in an American multinational technology company, has been identified as Shivam Arora. The Delhi Police arrested a 29-year-old youth who was returning from his own wedding reception in a car borrowed from his friend. According to a Hindustan Times report, no trace of any intoxication was found in his blood sample, the police said.
On his way to his Karola Bagh residence from a hotel in Vasant Kunj, the technician was traveling with his wife and elder brother. “At the time of the incident, he was driving the car along with his wife and elder brother. According to preliminary investigation, the vehicle lost balance due to swerving, resulting in the car hitting a pillar where the three victims were standing near the stand. The family was returning home after attending a wedding reception,” another officer was quoted as saying by HT.
South West Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Amit Goel said, “There were three injured persons aged around 25, 35 and 23. All of them work in a restaurant at Ambience Mall. They were taken to hospital where one of them, Singh (23), died during treatment,” HT’HT’HT’HT reported.
The person who succumbed to his injuries has been identified as Rohit Singh. According to a Hindustan Times report, the 23-year-old deceased worked as a cook at Ambience Mall. An employee of a French chain of bakery-café restaurants, Paul was the sole breadwinner of the family.
Rohit Singh was standing near the footpath with his friends Kapil (35) and Lalit (25). Both, also employees of the same restaurant “Paul”, are undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the city. The deceased lived in a rented room in Munirka.
According to the police, the PČR notification of the accident was received at 2:33 am. The road in front of Ambience Mall leads in two directions – one towards Munirka and the other towards the turnpike. The speeding luxury car crashed into a partition when it lost its balance and drove onto the pavement where it crashed into three men before crashing into a pole.
The driver of the car was booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 106 (causing death by negligence), 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 281 (reckless driving or driving on public road).
