Delhi: Pregabalin, a prescription remedy that was supposed to treat anxiety, epilepsy and nerve pain, is sold across the counter on more government hands by Jan Aushadhi Kendras and private pharmacies across the national capital.
According to the Hindustan Times report, a medicine that is now also dubbed as a “trance drug” is easily accessible, although it is a planned medicine that should only be sold with a prescription.
What is Pregabalin?
Pregabalin is in the class of drugs called anticonvulsants. Anxiety prevents the brain from relaxing chemicals that cause one to worry.
Pregabalin, sold under the names of brands such as Lyrica, Alzain and Axalide, is to be issued only by a prescription.
“I said it was like alcohol”
The 23 -year -old software engineer who once accused of healing, has led to his addiction easy access.
“I was told that it was like alcohol, but cheaper, and you don’t have a hangover,” said engineer HT, adding that he was dependent on pregabalin to the extent that he began to consume “more than a dozen a day” compared to its earlier “three pills” per day.
The engineer who talked about his expression said, “No one stopped me. If the pharmacies had applied for a prescription, I might not have done so yet.”
What did the drug department of Delhi said
One official from the drug department in Delhi acknowledged this matter, but said that the ministry had not received any formal complaints.
He said that last year the Pandjab government wrote formally a center asking Pregabalin to be included in the H1 planned drug list. Any medicine with H1 classification orders pharmacists to maintain the same sales records and only with a prescription.
“We are aware that the abuse of pregabalin is a growing problem. Pandjab was particularly faced by the serious abuse of this drug among young people,” the official said. “But because Pregabalin is not yet listed within the H1 plan, it is much harder to regulate its sale,” HT quoted as a proverb.
