As many as nine people died and three others were injured in a massive fire that broke out in a residential building in the Sadh Nagar area of Palam in Delhi in the early hours of Wednesday, fire officials told ANI.

Images from the scene showed thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the building and rising into the sky, with flames engulfing parts of the structure as firefighters battled the blaze in the crowded market area.
The eight deceased, namely Pravesh (33), Kamal (39), Ashu (35), Lado (70), Himanshi (22) and three minor girls aged 15, 6 and 3, were declared brought dead at Manipal Hospital, ANI reported.
Meanwhile, one woman, Deepika (28), was declared brought dead at the IGI Hospital, where two people, Anil (32) and a girl (2) are being treated.
Anil, 32, and one girl, aged two, are under treatment and Sachin, 29, was treated for 25 percent burns at Safdarjung Hospital, PTI reported.
The five-storey building had a dressing room and cosmetics on the ground and first floors, while the family of showroom owner Rajender Kashyap lived on the second and third floors.

Deputy Inspector General of the National Rescue Service Vicky Ranga told ANI that the rescue operation was difficult as the fire had damaged the building from inside.
“We reached the spot within 10 minutes and the Delhi Fire Service and other agencies were trying to put out the fire…,” he said, according to AP.
He added: “We have taken two dead bodies from there. The building is damaged from inside… and it is a big challenge to carry out a rescue operation in such a building… Nearby buildings have been evacuated.”

Meanwhile, Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu said rescue and firefighting operations are being closely monitored and all necessary support is being extended.
“Deeply saddened by the residential fire near Palam Metro. My thoughts are with those affected by this tragic loss,” he said in a post on X.
Delhi Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, who chaired his first meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Wednesday, directed a comprehensive fire audit across the city.
The direction came in the wake of a fire in a multi-storey building in southwest Delhi’s Palam area that left at least nine people dead and three others injured.

In a post on X, the LG’s office said: “We discussed today’s unfortunate residential fire; conducting a comprehensive fire audit across locations and institutions to strengthen prevention.”
