Delhi-NCR: Rain, BRICS VVIP exams trigger traffic snarl from Lutyens’ Delhi to Gurugram: Control Advisory | Today’s news
Parts of the Delhi-NCR region remained waterlogged after heavy rain since Saturday morning, disrupting traffic on major roads and highways. Airlines today also issued a travel advisory for passengers traveling from Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Flight alert issued
Indigo on X wrote: “Bad weather is currently affecting #Delhi leading to possible flight delays. Our teams are closely monitoring the situation, if you are traveling today we recommend checking flight status on our website via or in-app before leaving for the airport. Please also expect longer travel times as road conditions may be slower than usual. We appreciate your continued patience and understanding. Your comfort and safety remain our top priority.”
Several areas were waterlogged, causing significant traffic disruption, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) further predicted heavy rain and strong winds in the state capital.
Various parts of the city witnessed intermittent showers since Saturday morning following the weather forecast.
Incessant rainfall has left roads and residential areas waterlogged.
The traffic jam was further aggravated by the motorcade test ahead of the upcoming BRICS summit scheduled to be held on September 12-13, 2026.
Coping with waterlogged roads with movement of VIPs in the capital, Delhi Traffic Police and Gurugram Police reportedly diverted traffic on several key routes. A warning was also issued to commuters.
NH 48 and the Gurugram-Delhi lane
Heavy waterlogging is reported at Shiv Murti. According to a report by India.com, the flooded road caused major traffic jams on the Gurugram-Delhi lane. The Gurugram Traffic Police has advised motorists to take U-turn at IFFCO Chowk and use MG Road or Aya Nagar border to enter Delhi. Passengers traveling to the airport have also been advised to take alternative routes.
Dwarka Expressway
Delhi Traffic Police reported waterlogging on Road No. 210 from Rotary Chowk towards DJB Chowk and Omaxe. Commuters have been advised to avoid the affected section and use road No. 224.
Water has also accumulated at the underpasses on the Dwarce Expressway.
Indira Gandhi International Airport
Several areas around the Indira Gandhi International Airport were also hit by heavy rain, including Terminal 3, the forecourt and the underpass connecting Mahipalpur, Mehrauli and Vasant Kunj.
On Friday, flights were diverted to Jaipur and Lucknow due to weather conditions.
Airport-bound passengers have been advised to use the Airport Express Line.
Mathura Road, Malviya Nagar
Meanwhile, a large fallen tree has reportedly blocked traffic near Apollo Hospital on Mathura Road. Traffic police were said to be working to clear the road by removing the tree. However, heavy traffic is expected on the road.
Commuters have also been advised to use MB Road as another tree has reportedly fallen near Malviya Nagar and Badarpur metro stations.
VVIP movement
Traffic restrictions and security measures in Delhi are believed to be tighter due to the rehearsal of the BRICS summit. The early VVIP movement was reported to have affected traffic in Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, Rajesh Pilot Marg and Subramaniam Bharti Marg.
