IMD predicts heavy rain, strong winds over Mumbai; waterlogging disrupts western rail services

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds over Mumbai and adjoining districts on Wednesday, even as heavy waterlogging caused by rain disrupted rail services on the Western Railway network.

According to the IMD, Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, while isolated places in Palghar are expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall. Wind speed of 60-70 kmph is also likely over parts of Konkan region.

The Met Office said a gradual reduction in rain activity is expected from July 9 onwards. Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are also likely to see heavy rain at isolated places.

The IMD warned that the intense rain could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas, flash floods, disruption of road, rail, air and ferry services, rough sea conditions along the Konkan coast, landslides in vulnerable areas and damage to crops and weak structures. He advised people to avoid waterlogged areas, check traffic conditions before traveling and take precautions during thunderstorms.

The Met department added that after initial heavy rain, light to moderate rainfall is expected in most districts from July 12.
