Delhi HC Verdict Telegram LIVE: Court to pass judgment on NEET-UG-related ban at Center soon | Today’s news
Delhi HC Verdict Telegram LIVE: The Delhi High Court is set to deliver its verdict at 10:30 AM on Friday on Telegram’s plea challenging the central government’s decision to temporarily suspend the messaging platform in India ahead of the NEET reexamination.
Justice Tejas Karia reserved judgment on Thursday after hearing detailed arguments from both Telegram and the Centre. In defense of the temporary ban, the central government has argued that Telegram has become a major channel for organized cheating groups allegedly involved in leaking and distributing NEET exam materials. According to the center, restricting access to the platform until June 22 was a necessary step to ensure the integrity of the review and prevent further abuse.
Why did Telegram challenge the Center’s temporary ban?
Telegram challenged the Centre’s temporary ban in the Delhi High Court, arguing that the blanket ban on the app is an unconstitutional and disproportionate measure that unfairly penalizes India’s 150 million users just to deal with localized exam-related cheating.
Is telegram banned in India now?
Yes, Telegram is temporarily blocked in India under Section 69A of the IT Act till June 22, 2026. The government enforced this nationwide restriction ahead of the re-run of the NEET-UG medical entrance test following reports that fraud rackets were using the platform to cheat candidates and share fake leaked written exams.

Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov challenged the Indian IT ministry’s week-long ban on Telegram “because some users shared leaked exam questions”.
“This is punishing the 150 million regular Telegram users in India – not the insiders who leaked the exam materials. And the ban didn’t stop anything. The leaks just moved to other apps,” he said.
He further claimed that Telegram has taken down hundreds of channels over the past few weeks that allegedly shared leaked exam materials and related scams in India.
“We will also make the ‘edited’ label more visible to prevent backdating scams,” he said. “Telegram is a force for good. Banning it – even temporarily – is a mistake.”

Telegram argued on Thursday that it has fully cooperated with law enforcement agencies and taken action against channels and groups found to be involved in illegal activities, according to ANI. The platform argued that other, less restrictive options were available to the government and argued that the blocking order did not meet the constitutional principle of proportionality.
