Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday addressed the recent reports of alleged misbehavior against women from northeast Delhi in Malviya Nagar and expressed her concern over the incident.
The chief minister said she raised awareness about the incident through social media brands and videos from various influencers.
“I want to emphasize that in Delhi, the capital of the nation, our brothers and sisters from the Northeast have the same right as anyone from any other state. People from border states come to Delhi and work hard to earn a living, thereby contributing to the progress of the city. Any form of misbehavior against them will not be tolerated. Strict action will be taken against those responsible,” Gupta said in a video shared on social media.
Delhi Police arrested a married couple for allegedly racially abusing three of their neighbors from the northeast in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area, an officer said on Wednesday.
Ruby Jain and her husband, Harsh Priya Singh, were taken into custody after investigation in an FIR registered at the Malviya Nagar police station.
“Delhi belongs to everyone. Here, the dignity, respect and safety of every citizen is paramount,” Gupta said in a post on social media.
According to the police, Ruby Jain allegedly hurled insulting and derogatory remarks at three women from Arunachal Pradesh during an argument over repairs at their rented accommodation on February 20.
The police invoked the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in the FIR against the arrested woman.
Gupta further stated that she intends to engage with the wider Northeast community in Delhi to address systemic issues and ensure their safety through potential policy interventions.
“I will not only meet these sisters but also other residents from North East to listen to their problems and offer solutions. If any policy changes are required, we will make them. For any problems or suggestions you can DM me directly,” concluded Gupta.
A case has been registered at South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar police station against two residents for allegedly racially abusing and criminally intimidating three female tenants from the northeast region, police said.
what was that
The FIR at PS Malviya Nagar was registered under BNS Section 79 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), Section 351(2) (Punishment for criminal intimidation), Section 196 (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, etc.) (several persons acting together with common intention, hereinafter deed) (5)
The incident took place on the afternoon of February 20, 2026, when three women, living as tenants in an apartment complex in Malviya Nagar, were supervising electrical work in their flat.
When the electrician began drilling, construction dust reportedly filtered down into the adjacent spaces.
This minor ecological grievance quickly turned into a volatile confrontation. The complainants alleged psychological harassment and humiliation, although no physical injuries were reported.
