At least three people, including two children, were killed after a four-storey building collapsed in northeast Delhi’s New Seemapuri on Wednesday afternoon (October 7, 2026). Eleven people have so far been pulled from the rubble, although operations are underway to rescue several people trapped in the rubble, police said.

Among the victims was a woman who was four months pregnant; police identified her as Gulafsa. Two children, one of whom was 12 years old, have not yet been identified.

The incident comes a month after a five-storey building collapsed at Satya Niketan, killing seven people.

North East Delhi District Magistrate Ajay Kumar said the structure collapsed between 3:00 pm and 3:15 pm “We immediately informed all concerned authorities, including NDRF, DDMA and MCD,” he said. Mr. Kumar said the people rescued included tenants in the building and some passers-by. “We found out from local residents that there was some demolition work going on in the neighboring building, which might have affected the strength of that building as well,” he said.

The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) has dispatched three water tenders and an incident response team to the site. Rescue teams located and contacted persons trapped under the debris, while the NDRF deployed sniffer dogs.

“We have made contact with the people trapped under the debris. We are hearing them and they will be rescued soon. It was a residential building on a plot of about 25 square yards. Two adjoining buildings were also affected by the collapse,” said Rajendra Prasad Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdar).

An official of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi said the building had developed a crack following the tremors felt in the capital on Tuesday evening following the 4.9-magnitude earthquake in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli.

“The crack was visible since last night. At the time of the collapse, two to three wranglers were sitting near the wall. They were affected by the collapse. Part of the wall of the adjacent idgah also collapsed,” he said.

The official said the building was at least 25 years old and occupied. The scavengers caught under the rubble are suspected to be from the Rohingya community.

Traffic police issued an advisory for citizens to avoid the areas around the collapse. “Traffic is affected around Seemapuri Gol Chakkar, DLF Bhopura and adjoining roads. Every free lane is giving way to ambulances and rescue vehicles to pass through easily. Avoid the area if possible. Do not stop, park or congregate near the site and follow directions of traffic personnel,” the traffic police advisory said.
