Police on Friday said there was a major security breach at the Indira Gandhi International Airport after a British national flying in from Bangkok allegedly fled the immigration area and fled into the city, triggering a massive search operation, PTI reported.
Patrick was due to be deported to the UK via Thailand but managed to evade authorities after landing in Delhi. He allegedly fled the immigration area and left the airport premises before formal processing, police said, as reported by PTI.
The incident took place on October 28 when the passenger, identified as Fitz Patrick, a British national, arrived in Delhi from Bangkok, they said.
What did the policeman say?
“A security lapse was reported at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after a British national who was to be deported to the UK via Thailand escaped from the immigration area and entered the city. The Delhi Police and security agencies launched a search operation and lodged an FIR while questioning the airline staff,” a senior police officer said.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which oversees airport security, joined forces with the Immigration Department and the Delhi Police in a coordinated operation to trace the fugitive.
“Airport CCTV footage is being scanned to determine the sequence of events and identify possible mistakes that led to the escape,” officials said.
A case has been registered in the relevant sections of the local police station and teams have been deployed to search for possible hideouts and exits in the National Capital Region (NCR), they said.
Other details regarding the motive, background and current whereabouts of the passenger are being verified, the officer added.
