The Delhi airport said on Saturday morning that a technical glitch that caused hundreds of flight delays across India was “gradually improving” and airline operations were also returning to normal.
Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi handles more than 1500 flights daily. More than 800 flights were reportedly delayed and at least 20 flights were canceled due to a technical glitch on Friday.
In its latest passenger advisory issued at 6:30 am, the Delhi airport said: “The technical issue that affected the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), which supports the flight planning process of Air Traffic Control, is gradually improving.

The Airports Authority of India announced on Friday that the technical problem at the Delhi airport has been resolved. They also said that due to some backlogs, there may be some delays in the normal functioning of the automated operations, but the situation will be normal soon.
In a post on X, AAI said: “The AMSS systems are now up and running. Due to some backlogs, there may be some delays in the normal functioning of automated operations, but the situation will be normal soon.”
What caused the technical glitch at Delhi airport?
AAI said in a post on X that a problem was detected in the IP-based AMSS system on November 6. However, to process the flight plans manually, AAI said it has deployed additional staff.
AAI provides air traffic control, navigation and other services to airports.
“The OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) was involved and additional staff were deployed to manually process flight plans for the air traffic control system to immediately ensure uninterrupted and safe flight operations.”

“A team of ECIL officials and AAI staff are still on site. AMSS systems are now up and running. Due to some backlogs, there may be some delays in the normal functioning of automated operations, but the situation will be normal soon,” AAI said in another post on X.
ECIL (Electronics Corporation of India Ltd) officials from Hyderabad came to the state capital to help resolve the technical issue.
An inquiry will be conducted to find out the reasons that led to the technical problem, news agency PTI said citing sources.
There were reportedly some problems with AMSS, which provides information for the Auto Track System, which provides flight plans.
As problems with the system persist, air traffic controllers are preparing flight plans manually with the available data, a time-consuming process and many flights are getting delayed as a result, a PTI report said.
