Even as city dwellers continue to face parking problems whenever they take out their vehicles, work on some of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation’s multi-level parking (MLCP) projects has been delayed for a long time. Some of these projects should have been commissioned at least two years ago. At a press conference on Thursday, Mayor VVRajesh admitted that “even 60%” of some MLCP projects have not been completed, blaming the previous administration for the delay. He also pointed to problems related to access to the existing car park. In 2018, administrative sanction was given to a total of three MLCPs in the city. They were originally planned under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 1.0 scheme. One of these parking lots with seven above-ground floors and a capacity of 102 cars, located in the company’s office premises, has been completed. However, the projects at Putharikandam Maithanam and Medical College continued to drag on due to various issues. With the AMRUT 1.0 project implementation period approaching in 2023, two MLCP projects were transferred to the Smart City scheme as these projects could not be accommodated under AMRUT 2.0. The AMRUT 1.0 scheme contained a component for “improvement of urban transport facilities” under which MLCPs were planned. However, AMRUT 2.0, which focuses more on drinking water related issues, does not have such a component. The MLCP at the Medical College, estimated to cost ₹19 crore, will accommodate a total of 210 cars. Another MLCP located at the corner of Putharikandam Maithanam also has almost similar design.
