The implementation of important infrastructure projects either completely or partly in Tamil Nadu was “held due to delay in land obtaining”, said the Minister of Railway Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday.
While about 4,315 hectares of soil were needed for Tamil Nadu projects, about 1,038 hectares (24%) of the soil have been obtained so far and 3,277 hectares (76%) have not been obtained.
“To speed up land acquisition, it is necessary to support the government of Tamil Nadu,” the Minister said. Some of the main projects that were delayed as a result of land acquisition, including discovered Tiruvanam – the new Line of Truvanamalai, Attipur – Putur New Line, Morappur – Darmapuri, Mannargudi – Pattukkottai, Thanjavur – Pattukkottai Lines.
“The Indian government focuses on the implementation of projects, but success depends on the support of the government of Tamil Nadu. The land is obtained for rail projects through the state government, which decides on the payment of compensation to be paid,” the Minister said.
Mrs Thangapandian asked whether the Union government provided reasonable funds for the land raising process to speed up long -awaiting rail projects in Tamil Nadu. “There were 15 projects – nine new lines, three breakup conversions and three doubles – covering a total length of 1,700 km, which costs 28,808 Crore, fully/partly in Tamil Nadu, were sanctioned,” he said. The projects covering a length of 665 km were listed and by March 2025 expenditure on CRORE 7 591 GBP, the Minister said.
