
Dehradun was placed under a red warning on Tuesday morning after heavy rainfall was triggered by Cloudburst, causing the river there to overflow and flood parts of the city. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) warned against extremely heavy downpours in Dehradun and Tehri Garhwal within 9 hours, along with storms and impact winds up to 87 km/h.
Tapkeshwar Temple dipped
Dramatic visuals from Dehradun showed the river there in full quantities and immersed the temple Tapkeshwar Mahadev, a worshiped pilgrimage site. Temple Priest Acharya Bipin Joshi said that the water level began to rise around 5 am and flooded the whole temple space.
“This kind of situation has not occurred in a very long time. There were losses in different places … People should avoid approaching near the rivers. Sanctum sanctorum remains safe and no victims have been reported,” Joshi said.
Cm dhami review of the situation
The Chief Minister UtTarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed damages in Sahastradhara and said rescue and auxiliary operations are underway.
“Some shops were damaged due to heavy rains in Sahastradhara, Dehradun, late at night. The District Administration, SDF and Police reached places and deal with relief and rescue. I personally follow the situation,” he said at X.
Cloudbursts Common in hilly terrain
Cloudbursts are not unusual in the monsoons in the Himalayan region. Last week, the lightning flood launched cloudburst in the district of Bilaspur Himachal Pradesh 10 vehicles and damaged crops.
