India strongly opposes “targeting of civilians and infrastructure” as well as disruption of shipping due to war in West Asia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said at the launch of the 9th Indian Ocean Conference in Port Louis, which was overshadowed by the conflict and the prospect of talks due to begin in Islamabad on Saturday (11 April 2026).
Mr Jaishankar, who was in Mauritius on a two-day visit before leaving for the UAE on Friday (April 10, 2026) evening, met many leaders from the region, including the Mauritian leadership, and his counterparts from Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Seychelles and other representatives from the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. Many delegates canceled their participation due to conflict and travel disruptions. No delegate from the Maldives attended as Mauritius and the Maldives severed diplomatic ties due to territorial differences over the Chagos Islands.
