Decency in Public Discourse: On Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Ambiguous Remarks

Public discourse is characterized by certain rules and codified conduct. While humor is a definite tool for wooing an audience, profanity should have no place in interactions in a public forum. The remarks made by Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin on Monday (August 3, 2026), the video of which has now gone viral, sit squarely in the second quarter.

Addressing a public meeting, Mr. Udhayanidhi’s twin remarks were made in response to the crowd raising the actor’s name in response to a comment on what was important to Chief Minister Joseph Vijay. Addressing a protest rally in Thanjavur over the Cauvery dispute, the LoP hit out at the Chief Minister and alleged that while Tamil Nadu did not get a drop of water, Mr. Vijay remained uninterested.
