
Assata Shakur, a former member of the Black Liberation Army and Black Panther, died at the age of 78 on Thursday, September 25, 2025 in Havana in Cuba after she fled after her conviction for the murder of a state soldier in 1973.
Joanne Deborah Byron, an American citizen also known as “Assata Shakur”, died at the age of 78 due to health complications related to her age.

Who was Assata Shakur?
Assata Shakur, who was born as Joanne Chesimard in the United States, was convicted of the killing of a state soldier in New Jersey (police) named Werner Foerster during a shootout on May 2, 1973.
According to USA Today News, she and two others were stopped at New Jersey Turnpike for breaking a motor vehicle. The shooting of that day also killed another fellow Assat Shakur while shot twice by the police.
