Work and May Day commemorate the fighting of workers, yet they do so in different ways. While May Day is observed around the world 1 May, the United States honors its workforce on the first Monday of September.
Why does the US celebrate the Labor Day in September?
The day of work is a federal holiday in the United States that will recognize the contributions of American workers and the working -class movement.
Its origin follows back to the end of the 19th century, a period marked with long hours, low wages and dangerous working conditions.
When trade unions and activists opposed the exploitation of the workforce in the workplaces and fought for better treatment of workers at the peak of the industrial revolution, this idea arose according to the magazine Providence Journal to create a day dedicated to celebrating members of trade and trade unions.
According to the US Ministry of Labor, the first holiday of the Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York in accordance with the plans of the Central Trade Unions. Since then, Americans have been celebrating the day of work with a show and parties every year.
How is the May Day different?
May Day, also known as international workers, has its roots in the global working class movement. It commemorates the Haymarket affair from 1886, when in Chicago the Peace Assembly, which advocates an eight -hour working day, faced violent suppression.
Later, in 1889, the International Federation of Socialists and Trade Unions in Europe voted for the organization of the day of demonstrations the following year and selected 1 May as a day of work.
Why did we celebrate the May Day?
Because May is associated with socialism, political tension and work unrest, former US President Grover Cleveland and others chose another day as a more neutral way of celebrating workers and their contributions to the development of the United States.
Although both holidays – International Work Day (May Day) and Work Day – share a common purpose, they reflect different historical and political ways.
