
In connection with heavy rain and landslides in the district, which required 14 lives, on Sunday Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the situation in Darjeeling and the surrounding areas is carefully monitored. He also claimed that his government was determined to provide all possible assistance to those affected.
“Deep painful loss of life due to the misfortune of the bridge in Darjeeling. Defects to those who have lost their loved ones. He can recover soon,” PM Modi said on X.
“The situation in Darjeeling and the surrounding areas is carefully monitored due to heavy rains and landslides. We have committed to providing all possible assistance to those who were affected,” he added.
“Multiple NDF units in standby mode”: Amit Shah
The Minister of the Interior of the Union AMIT Shah also expressed sorrow over the loss of lives in Darjeeling and stated that the national strength teams were deployed, more soldiers were in the emergency regime.
Shah said he also talked to Darjeeling Member of Raja Bista and evaluated the situation there.
“Deeply saddled with tragic loss of life in Darjeeling due to heavy rains. My thoughts are with people who have lost their loved ones. Praying for rapid recovery of the injured,” Shah said in a post on X.
The Minister of the Interior said the NDF teams have reached their seats and other teams are in standby to join them if necessary.
“BJP Karyakartas also provides necessary help people in need,” he added.
Darjeeling rain
At least 14 people died and several others disappeared because continuous heavy rainfall on Saturday launched several landslides over the hills of Darjeeling in the northern part of West Bengal, sweeping houses, damaged the roads and cut off several distant villages, the officials said.
According to the reports assembled by the NDRF and the district administration, deaths were reported from several places – Sarsaly, JASBIRGAON, Mirik Basti, Dhar Gaon (Moshi), Nagarakata and Mirik Lake.
Darjeeling Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Richard Lepcha told PTI that rescue and auxiliary operations with the help of police teams, local administration and reactions to disasters are underway.
Major Minister Mamata Baerjee announced compensation for the victims without specifying that amount and stated that on October 6, North Bengal would visit the situation in the region, where a large number of tourists were also affected.
At least 40 people were rescued from the debris in Dhar Gaon in Nagarakata, where several houses were limp.
