Telangana Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has written a letter to Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri with three requests to address the shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Telangana. The problems faced by LPG-dependent cars in particular affect the livelihoods of drivers and their families, as well as public transport.

80% LPG for cars supplied by private shops
Citing available data, Mr Reddy said in a letter dated Monday (March 30) that there are around one lakh LPG-dependent cars in the state. Gas is distributed in the state by Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and private operators. The PSUs, including Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPLC) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), together have 33 outlets with a market share of 20%. The remaining 80% share is served by private operators, including Super Gas, Go Gas, Total Energies, Prime Gas, Extra Gas, Aegis Gas and Uni Gas, through 110 outlets across the state.
55 MT per day of downtime
“Due to prevailing supply constraints, there is a shortfall of around 55 MT per day of Auto LPG. Most of the private outlets are facing drying up, leading to disruption of public transport services and consequent public disorder,” the minister said in the letter.
Three requests
He urged the Union Minister to increase the availability of Auto LPG at PSU outlets and give immediate instructions to IOCL, HPCL and BPCL to supply the deficit LPG to private entities. Mr. Reddy also said that while PSU outlets charge ₹75 per liter of automotive LPG, private marketing companies sell at ₹93 per liter and demanded regulatory action to prevent undue price hike.
On Monday, the minister directed senior officials to find ways to increase Hyderabad Metro Rail and Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) bus services as people are finding it difficult to find cars on ride-hailing apps.
