In Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi, who has the ability to exceed the wildest rivals in a classic chess style, they will be headed by Indian challenges in the Norwegian chess tournament from Monday.
Gukesh will accept world no.1 Carlsen in the opening round of what should be one of the most challenging tournament matches, while Erigaisi’s first timer will start his campaign against Chinese Wei Yi.
Gukesh acknowledged that from black pieces is a complex design against Magnus Carlsen. Gukesh and Carlsen will play a classic format for the first time after the Indian became the world champion at the end of last year and the opening match will be essential for both to get deeper into the tournament.
“Sure, it’s a (match against Carlsen) a special game that will start the tournament. But also, I think you play all players with both colors, so it really won’t change,” Gukesh said.
“Since it is the beginning of the tournament, I think we will both try to be as beautiful as possible and get to the tournament as quickly as possible, as it is the first round.”
“In the first round it is always a bit difficult to get the best shape, so it will be a fun challenge,” added Gukesh, whose form fell after the world triumph last year.
Carlsen also kept his cards close to his chest and said he wasn’t “sure what to expect” in the opening round because he played very little classic chess late.
