
After the weakening of the Senyar storm, it seems that trouble is brewing from a new cyclonic storm named ‘Ditwah’. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the new storm is expected to move northwest over the Sri Lankan coast and the adjacent southwest Bay of Bengal.
The impact of Cyclone Ditwah is expected to be widespread and will be felt on November 30 in several states including Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The prevailing atmospheric system is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall till November 30.
Where is Ditwah?
Cyclone Ditwah “with a speed of 8 kmph during the last 6 hours and was centered at 2330 hrs IST of yesterday 27 Nov 2025 over the same region, near 7.9°N and 81.3°E, about 8 km northwest of Batticaloa (Sri Lanka), 200 km south of Trincomalee 80 km south of north-northeast of Hambantota (Sri Lanka), 480 km south-southeast of Puducherry (India) and 580 km south-southeast of Chennai (India),” the IMD said in a post on X.
Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely in Tamil Nadu today and tomorrow, the weather agency said.
IMD predicts heavy rains in 5 states
In its latest press release, the IMD predicted the impact of Ditwah: “Under the influence of cyclonic storm Ditwah (pronounced: Ditwah) over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent coast of Sri Lanka, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu during 27-30 November with isolated extremely heavy falls on 29 November.
Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Thoothukkudi and Tirunelveli districts are on IMD orange alert due to heavy rains. Sivaganga, Tenkasi and Virudhunagar are on yellow alert tomorrow.
Meanwhile, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema are expected to receive exceptionally heavy to very heavy rainfall till December 2.
Forecasting isolated extremely heavy rainfall on November 30 in Kerala, the IMD said that isolated heavy rainfall is likely till November 29. Telangana is likely to witness heavy rain on November 30 and December 1, while South Interior Karnataka may brace for heavy rains on November 29. Warnings against thunderstorms and lightning also apply to the above-mentioned states.
The IMD in its press release dated November 27 said: “Thunderstorm very likely over Tamil Nadu during November 27-December 1; Kerala and Mahe during December 27-29; Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam during November 28-December 1; North Interior Karnataka on November 30 and South Interior Karnataka on November 30.”
