With the Holi festival approaching, cyber security officials have warned citizens of an increase in online and digital payment scams, especially those linked to holiday shopping, event bookings, travel plans and social media activity.
According to the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB), fraudsters are sending fake Holi offers, discounted colorful and gift baskets, party tickets, food delivery offers and cashback links through WhatsApp, SMS, social media platforms and email. Fake e-commerce websites and fraudulent payment links are used to steal banking credentials and personal information.
Bureau director Shikha Goel said, “Citizens must remain cautious while shopping online during the festive season. Cybercriminals take advantage of festivals when online transactions increase. Do not click on unknown links or download apps from unverified sources. Verify websites carefully before making payments and never share OTP, PIN or bank credentials with anyone,” she said.
Officials said that in several cases, users are receiving messages offering tickets to Holi events, community tickets or bulk paint orders, redirecting them to phishing sites or quick installation of malicious apps. Such applications have access to one-time passwords, financial data, contacts and social media accounts and can be used to commit other fraud.
Victims usually receive attractive festival greetings or booking links that lead to fake websites or download malicious apps. The fraudsters then collect the OTP, card details and login details. Hacked accounts are often used to target a victim’s contacts.
Citizens who suspect fraud or who have clicked on suspicious links have been advised to immediately stop all financial transactions, not share OTP, PIN, CVV numbers or passwords, save screenshots of messages and transaction details and notify their bank or payment application immediately.
Victims have been urged to report the incidents immediately by dialing 1930, the National Cyber Fraud Helpline, or by registering a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Officials said early reporting greatly increases the chances of preventing financial loss.
