Cyber help desks will be set up at all police stations in Kozhikode district
Cyber help desks will be set up at all police stations in Kozhikode district to help victims of cyber frauds, hear their complaints and facilitate immediate action, as per the state level order of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The dedicated counters, staffed by trained officers, are meant to provide faster legal aid and other services to people approaching police stations with cyber-related complaints. Three police officers will be assigned to each help desk. Their functioning will be supervised by assistant commissioners for cyber units in the respective police districts.
“Though cyber crime cases are registered at police stations, the workload of other cases often makes it difficult for police officers to hear complaints in detail and initiate swift action. Help desks, planned as part of a state-wide project, will be the solution to this problem,” says a senior police officer attached to the Cyber Cell here. According to him, the help desks are established based on the recommendations of various cyber police stations.
The primary responsibility of the counters will function as independent wings in each police station and exclusively guide victims in cyber crime cases. The initiative is aimed at making cybercrime-related assistance available at the police station level and ensuring rapid intervention and follow-up. Designated staff will also assist complainants in reporting incidents online and registering complaints whenever required.
Based on instructions from the office of the state police chief, the counters will help complainants get updated information about the status of their cyber crime complaints. Cases requiring specialized investigation will be immediately referred to the relevant cyber police station, cyber cell or relevant departments. Officers in charge of the help desk will also refer major cyber crime cases to the hi-tech cell or special investigation teams for further action.
According to officers at cyber police stations here, help desk coordinators will be given special training to deal with different types of cyber crime and ensure better monitoring. They will also coordinate cyber crime awareness programs within the limits of their respective police stations.
