CWG: India’s Jadumani beats Pakistani boxer, dedicates win to Kargil heroes

India’s Jadumani Singh produced a performance against Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday as he thrashed his opponent 5-0 in a high-voltage clash and dedicated the win to the heroes of the Kargil war.

With chants of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and ‘India, India’ ringing around the SEC Center in Glasgow, the Army boxer produced a composed and technically superior performance to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

Jadumani had the crowd behind him before the opening bell, but once the match started he let his boxing do the talking.

The Indian was wary in the opening round as he struggled to grasp Rehman’s rhythm. Once Jadumani found his opponent, he began to find his range with sharp hooks and straight punches.

His speed and movement repeatedly troubled Rehman, who was counted out standing in the second round after Jadumani landed a stinging right hand.

With the contest firmly in control, Jadumani stayed level in the final round. He stood still in the middle of the ring, even urging Rehman to step forward before using his superior speed to counter and move away.

The judges were unanimous in their verdict and Jadumani won 5-0.

JADUMANI DEDICATES WIN TO KARGIL HEROES

He won the Kargil Vijay Diwas, making the moment even more significant for the Indian boxer.

“I want to dedicate this win to the heroes of Kargil. I want to beat everyone and win gold for India,” Jadumani said after the match.

Jadumani is now just one win away from winning a Commonwealth Games medal.

Asian Games bronze medalist Preeti Pawar also advanced to the quarterfinals, brushing aside her pre-quarterfinal opponent Deborah Mtenje of Malawi. Preeti won the Judges Stop Contest (RSC) in the second round.

But for Jadumani, the night belonged to a victory over Pakistan, a packed arena and a tribute to the soldiers he wanted to pay.
