A recent study conducted by an expert led by Sajin Kumar, a associate professor at the Geological Department of the University of Keral, found that cutting a slope to expand the road to Munnar-Bodimettu section in Kochi-Danushkodi National Highway was an important factor contributed to the recent origin near the old government in Devikulm in Idukki.
Two main landslides appeared near the old government college 26 and 27. Driver Ganesshan, 58, Munnar Anthoniyar Nero, died and suffered injuries in this incident.
Dr. Sajin Kumar said that the recent landslides occurred near the place where the main landslide appeared in 2018. “On August 16, 2018, however, part of the hill behind the old government university and destroyed the building.
“Lack of measures, such as support walls, thickets or bush to protect high slopes created during road expansion, is an important factor that led to recent landslides,” he said, adding that there are chances of other landslides.
The team of experts organized a drone inspection on the spot and is ready to present a detailed report on the study if the District Administration asks for it.
The team included Rajaneesh, a researcher at Keral University; Analyst of the Office for the Adaster Management in the TR Rajeev district; Assistant assistant at the Indian Institute of Scientific Education and Research Mohali Youenis Ali; and Al Achu, a student of research from Keral University for Fisheries and Ocean Studies.
