
Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) withdrew a circular head of the department’s head to confirm whether the teachers followed the workload, as stated by the University grants.
The circular was released by the 27th May 2025 registrar was withdrawn after the opposition of teachers who stated that it was contrary to an earlier order concerning working standards ratified by the academic council and a syndicate.
The Varsity of the authorities stated that the circular was withdrawn because it was contrary to the earlier order. They would supply this and placed in front of the competent authority for approval.
The circular asked the heads of the department/school/center to provide each teacher details of the workload assigned for one week as set by UGC. They were told to present the required documentary evidence.
The circular quotes UGC 2018 regulations, pointed out that the workload of teachers in full job should not be less than 40 hours a week for 30 working weeks (180 teaching days) in the academic year. It should be necessary for the teacher to be available for at least seven hours a day at the university/university, of which at least two hours to mentor students (at least 15 students per coordinator) for the development of community/extra curriculum activities/libraries in the case of university courses and at least two hours in postgraduate courses. The minimum direct learning process should be: Associate Professor – 16 hours a week; Associate Professor – 14 hours per week; And professor – 14 hours a week, he said.
Teachers who opposed the circle stated that the administrative wing had issued a circular without verifying the standards related to the workload of the academic council and the syndicate earlier.
