Tamil Nadu Weather Updates: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said there is a possibility of a cyclone forming over the southern Bay of Bengal. The weather agency further said that it is likely to move west-northwestward and is expected to concentrate as a depression over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, off the coast of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karajkal and south Andhra Pradesh by this afternoon.
A red alert – indicating extremely heavy rainfall – was issued by the meteorological office for several districts in the coastal state: Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram, while the capital Chennai was on orange alert.
Parts of the southern state, including the capital Chennai, were inundated, affecting normal life. Schools were closed in Chennai. Neighboring Puducherry has also declared school holidays on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Chennai’s iconic Marina Beach is experiencing rough weather with strong winds lashing the coast as the Northeast Monsoon intensifies.
The latest IMD bulletin said, “Heavy to very heavy rain is likely at a few places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Karaikal region. “Heavy rain is likely at isolated places over the districts Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Vellore, Tirupattur, Dharmapuri and Pudukkottai.”
