The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings produced a rare and unusual moment on Friday as a batting error involving young batsman Ayush Mhatre left players, commentators and fans stunned.
The incident took place at the start of CSK’s innings after Sanju Samson was dismissed by Xavier Bartlett on the last ball of the second over. Walking in at number 3, Mhatre was subjected to a routine test with the bat, but what followed was anything but routine.

Initially, Mhatra’s bat did not pass the meter, which caused immediate concern. A replacement bat was brought out, but it didn’t clear the test either. In a bizarre sequence, the second substitution also failed, leaving the youngster in an increasingly awkward and precarious position in the goal area as the delay lengthened.
However, confusion soon gave way to mistrust. Upon rechecking, the on-field umpire realized that the meter had been held incorrectly on previous attempts. When properly tested, Mhatra’s original bat passed without a hitch, ending the farcical sequence and allowing play to resume after a brief delay.
He left the comment box stunned for a moment. Ian Bishop pointed out: “The gauge was upside down,” while Michael Clarke could only react with repeated disbelief, exclaiming: “Oh my God!”
The incident quickly went viral on social media and fans were amused by the rare failure of the authority and the sequence of failed bat checks before the eventual rectification.
If the episode was bizarre, Mhatra’s reaction with the bat was emphatic. The 18-year-old settled in quickly before launching into a fluent innings of 73 off 43 deliveries, hitting six fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 169.77.
Mhatre thus became the youngest player to score an IPL half-century at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, achieving the feat in 18 years and 261 days. He also joined the elite group that included Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Prithvi Shaw for over fifty in the IPL before he was 19.
His 73 is now the third highest individual score in IPL history by an under-19 player. Notably, his own 94 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru last season is second on this list, while the top spot belongs to Suryavanshi, who scored 101 against Gujarat Titans at just 14.
Since his debut, Mhatre has emerged as one of CSK’s brightest young prospects. In nine innings, he amassed 313 runs at an average of 34.77 and a strike-rate of 183, including two fifties and a top score of 94.
Drafted as an injury replacement for captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Mhatre has already impressed in his debut season, scoring 240 runs in seven innings at an average of 34.28 with a strike tally of 189.
On a night briefly overshadowed by an umpire’s error, Mhatre made sure his composure and authority with the bat would be the constant takeaway.
