He feels that Dhoni’s current role as a lower-order batsman who faces very few balls does not add enough value to the team unless he takes on more responsibility.Pathan explained that while Dhoni remains a legend, his limited time at the crease does not always help the team. He suggested that a more active batsman like Sarfaraz Khan should take that place.

Shashi Tharoor & Samson’s Redemption Story: From Failure to Fame“Sarfaraz Khan has a place at number six in this team,” Pathan said on his YouTube channel. “But when MS Dhoni says he will play regularly… because sometimes even the best batsman in the world has to retire. Will he play all the matches? No? I have been saying for a long time that he is out for two matches, that is certainly nice for Dhoni’s fans, but it does not benefit CSK.” “If Dhoni has to play, it has to be four overs, that’s the only way it will benefit the team. If he doesn’t play, then he thinks ‘Let’s build a team where the batsmen have the best chance?’ because it is Dhoni’s team,” he added.Irfan Pathan Playing XI for CSK: Sanju Samson, Ayush Mhare, Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), Shivam Dube, Dewald Brevis, Sarfaraz Khan, Kartik Sharma, Prashant Veer, Akeal Hosein, Matt Henry, Noor Ahmad and Impact Player: Khaleel Ahmed.Pathan picked a playing eleven that included new faces like Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma, leaving Dhoni out for the time being. He also hinted that this decision may change depending on Dhoni’s role in the batting order. With CSK struggling in recent seasons, including a last-place finish in 2025, the franchise is looking to rebuild. The addition of players like Sanju Samson shows a shift towards the future and IPL 2026 could be a pivotal season in deciding the direction of the team and Dhoni’s role going forward.
