Pretoria Capitals rang in the new year with a SA20 win, fueled by a breathtaking late strike from Dewald Brevis and Sherfan Rutherford that left fans stunned and opponents shocked. The Capitals duo smashed six sixes in a row over two overs to turn the match on its head and seal their first win of the season in emphatic fashion.
Batting first on Wednesday night, the Pretoria Capitals were lifted by brutal finishing from Brevis and Rutherford, who combined to unleash one of the most explosive passages of batting seen in the tournament so far. The pair targeted the death overs with ruthless intent, sending the ball into the stands six times in a row and piling on the runs at a blistering pace. Their onslaught proved decisive as the Sourav Ganguly-coached side posted a daunting total of 220.

For Brevis, the knock had a special meaning. The Chennai Super Kings batter has come under scrutiny after a slow start to the season, he managed scores of 6 and 12 despite being picked for a record SA20 auction price of R16.5 million. Under pressure, the young South African responded in style, smashing an unbeaten 36 off just 13 deliveries at a strike rate of 276.92. It was a reminder of the fearless batting that has marked him as a key prospect in the build-up to the T20 World Cup in South Africa.
Rutherford, meanwhile, was even more devastating. All-rounder West Indies, who will represent Mumbai Indians in the IPL after being traded from Gujarat Titansproduced an amazing 47 not out off 15 balls.Having over 300, Rutherford dismantled the MI Cape Town bowling attack with clean, powerful strokes that left little room for error.
Together, the duo added 84 runs off just 27 balls, including 72 runs in the last three overs. What looked like a competitive total suddenly turned stunning and shifted the momentum firmly in Pretoria’s favor as they headed into the chase.
MI Cape Town’s response never really caught on. Faced with a formidable target, they tried to counter-attack but quickly lost wickets in bunches. The aggressive approach backfired as the batting order crumbled and the visitors were eventually bowled out for 135.
Not just an 85 run victory gave the Pretoria Capitals their first win of the season but it also sent a clear message to the rest of the league.
