Chennai Super Kings have suffered a major blow in IPL 2026 with their in-form youngster Ayush Mhatre ruled out for the rest of the season with a left hamstring tear. At a time when CSK were looking for consistency, the 18-year-old has quietly become one of their most reliable performers.
Mhatre’s rise has been one of the standout stories of CSK’s campaign. In a season where the batting unit has struggled to click collectively, his fearless approach at the top has provided rare momentum and early momentum in the power play.
The numbers reflect his influence. Mhatre has scored 201 runs at an astonishing rate of 177.87 this season, making him CSK’s most efficient batsman so far. His ability to take on bowlers from ball one began to shape CSK’s batting template.
His absence now leaves a sizable void, both in terms of runs and intent. With CSK already reeling from injuries, including the loss of Khaleel Ahmed, the team’s campaign is starting to look increasingly fragile.
The situation is further complicated by their position on the table. CSK are currently eighth with just two wins from six matches. With crucial matches against Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians coming up, finding a replacement for Mhatre becomes the immediate concern of the team management.
HOW DID AYUSH MHATRE GET INJURED?
Mhatra’s injury occurred during CSK’s chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he entered early and looked superb. He raced to 30 in just 12 balls and put the pressure back on the bowlers.
However, when he finished the second run, he suddenly reared up and pinched his hamstring, clearly in discomfort. A physio rushed to the field and Mhatre required treatment on the field.
Despite trying to move freely, he continued to bat and limp between the wickets. The situation became even more worrisome when he attempted a quick single, risking an escape due to his limited mobility.
His innings eventually ended when he mistimed an offensive shot and was caught in the outfield. While the dismissal ended a promising knock, the bigger setback was the injury that has now ruled him out of the tournament.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.
