Chennai Super Kings have appealed to cricket fans to avoid carrying political banners, flags and hoardings to the MA Chidambaram Stadium ahead of their Indian Premier League 2026 match against Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday 9th.
In a message posted on social media, CSK asked its supporters to focus on cricket and avoid political news at the Chepauk stadium.
“Come celebrate cricket and the spirit of the game with us. Anbuden requests our super fans not to carry banners, flags or hoards associated with any political party/person and enjoy the game in full yellow,” CSK wrote on its official social media.
CSK’s latest announcement comes after actor-turned-politician Vijay was appointed Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Vijay’s TVK was finally able to form the state government after days of back and forth with several other parties.
He will be sworn into his new role on Sunday, May 10.
NO WHISTLING DURING WORLD T20
It is also not the first time that the authorities have restricted certain items inside the stadium. Controversy erupted in February and March during the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after whistles to Chepauk were allegedly stopped.
The whistle is the election symbol of Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party. During the World Cup, police reportedly prevented fans from carrying whistles into the stadium and even warned vendors against selling them outside Chepauk.
This development sparked widespread debate as the slogan “Whistle Podu” has long been associated with CSK and the Chepauk culture. Fans have expressed surprise at the ban on whistles at a venue where they are traditionally seen as a key part of a match’s atmosphere.
However, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association later clarified that the restrictions were not imposed by them, the Board of Control for Cricket in India or the International Cricket Council. TNCA said it was informed about the restrictions by police authorities.
A senior Chennai police official later reportedly clarified that there was “no official ban” on the whistle and suggested that the confusion may have arisen due to extra caution by personnel on the ground.
CSK’s latest advisory before the LSG match seems to be aimed at ensuring that political messages don’t get people into trouble inside the stadium grounds.
